Bondi Junction Private Hospital (BJPH) is a licenced 10 bed private hospital providing the highest level of Facial Plastic Surgery, General Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery and ENT Surgery.

Our philosophy is to remain committed to assisting in making your hospital stay as pleasant as possible.

We aim to make your stay in hospital as comfortable as possible and minimise the stress and anxiety associated with having a surgical procedure, so please let us know what we can do for you to help achieve this.

Waiting Period on Day of Surgery

Although every attempt is made to ensure the waiting period before your operation is not unduly long, it is often not possible to schedule operations for a specific time, or to follow a specific schedule. Each procedure varies from patient to patient, some may require longer periods in theatre than others. The order of the list may also be altered, so that you may be called to theatre earlier or later than you expected.

You are therefore asked to bring with you something to occupy the time whilst you are waiting. All rooms are equipped with a HD digital TV.


The Hospital provides a selection of nutritious meals for overnight stay patients and light refreshments for day stay patients. Please ensure you advise Hospital Administration prior to admission if you require a special diet, e.g. diabetic/vegetarian/gluten free, etc.


BJPH is a "no smoking" environment in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety.


Outgoing calls may be made either from reception or from your own mobile phone in the ward area.  Alternatively, you may ask the Registered Nurse on duty to contact a friend or relative for you, if required. Should relatives need to contact the nurse on duty, phone direct (02) 8305 2519.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours finish at 8:00PM at the discretion of the nursing staff.

If your visitors arrive after 5:00PM, they will need to use the intercom system located at the front door on street level.


If your friends or relatives require accommodation close to the Hospital prior to or during your stay, we are able to recommend comfortable accommodation in the immediate vicinity. Please notify the Hospital Liaison Officer prior to admission if you would like to have further details.

Quest Apartments Bondi Junction are nearby as are the Meriton Apartments Bondi Junction.

Medical Records

A record will be kept of your procedure. This will be kept confidential and access is limited to those professionals involved in your care. The contents will be divulged only with your consent or where required by law.

Continuous Improvement

On discharge you will be given a Patient Satisfaction Survey. We would be grateful if you could participate and assist us in monitoring the standards of the Hospital. The nursing staff will also be phoning you a few days post operatively enquiring about your recovery.

On Discharge

After your operation, it is essential that you have a responsible adult to accompany you home and stay with you for 24 hours.

The Nursing staff will ensure that you have post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon and his/her contact details.

If a post-operative appointment has not been made for you prior to your discharge, please call your surgeon’s rooms to arrange one.


BJPH has a 7 bed licence for children aged from 4 years. Anaesthetists skilled and experienced in paediatric anaesthesia and Paediatric Nursing Staff are available to provide specialised care.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay with their children whilst on the ward. A parent may stay with their child while they are going to sleep for the operation as well as in the Recovery Room.

Children may feel more comfortable in their own pyjamas and are welcome to bring their favourite toy and any other special item of comfort such as their favourite blanket.

Pre-Admission Information

Bondi Junction Private Hospital (BJPH) offers you the convenience of either day surgery or overnight stay as appropriate to your specific needs. This will be in consultation with your Surgeon. The Hospital has modern and comfortable conveniences to cater to your needs.

To Reach the Hospital

BJPH is located in the heart of Bondi Junction and is reached easily by public transport or car. Located approximately two blocks away from the train station and bus terminal (refer to map on back page). Parking at the Hospital is available on the street (metered), or at the Library Car Park located in Ebley Street (one block away). If you require all day parking, the Library Car Park has an Early Bird offer which costs $13.00 for the day if you enter before 9:30AM and exit between 3:00PM and 9:00PM – see insert for details.

To Confirm Your Surgery Booking

Your date for surgery will be secured once payment (at least two weeks prior to surgery) has been received. You will be contacted by the Hospital Liaison Officer the day before your procedure to advise the time you need to be at the Hospital and fasting details. Please ensure you include on your Admission Form the most appropriate contact telephone number to avoid any difficulties in this regard. You must also provide a credit card number in the event of unforeseen extended theatre time in regard to your procedure. For any pre-admission information, please do not hesitate to contact the Hospital Liaison Officer (02) 8305 2503. Please ensure the following forms are signed and returned to the Hospital at least 2 weeks before surgery:

You can complete these forms, then print and return to the hospital. We would prefer if you Fax 02 8305 2550 or Email: Admin@bjph.com.au the completed forms and then bring your original signed documents with you on the day.

On the Day of Your Surgery

You will need to complete any additional, necessary paperwork, and be admitted by nursing staff. You will then change into a theatre gown before you go into theatre. Following admission your anaesthetist will see you and will ask about your medical history and explain the anaesthetic. After surgery you will be cared for by experienced nursing staff in the Recovery area until you are ready to return to the ward. The amount of time you then spend on the ward will depend on your procedure and planned length of stay, (i.e. day only or overnight).

What to bring

  • Any recent X-Rays, scans or tests results
  • All medications you are currently taking - in their original containers
  • Comfortable, appropriate clothing to wear home, toiletries, a book to read or music to listen to, if desired

What not to bring

  • Large amounts of money
  • Jewellery or other valuables
  • Notify staff on admission if you have valuables

Anaesthetic Information

Fasting before surgery

Fasting for a minimum of 6 hours is essential. If you are having a morning operation, have nothing to eat or drink after midnight. For afternoon operations have nothing to eat or drink after 6:00AM.

If you have not fasted adequately, your operation may need to be delayed.


If you would normally take medications during the fasting period, continue to take them at the normal times with a sip of water. Certain medications may not be taken before the operation and your surgeon will further advise you. If you are taking medication for diabetes please consult your surgeon.

Your obligations after an anaesthetic

Anaesthetic drugs may impair your judgement, so for 24 hours following your procedure do not:

  • Drive a motor vehicle
  • Operate machinery
  • Sign legal documents
  • Conduct business agreements
  • Make important decisions
  • Drink alcohol

Complications of anaesthesia

Many minor and some major complications are possible with anaesthesia. Serious health problems (eg a recent heart attack) may add extra risk. Please discuss any concerns with your Anaesthetist before surgery.

Common side-effects may include nausea and vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness or lethargy, sore throat, shivering, blurred vision, cognitive impairment, malaise, and pain or bruising at the site of injection.

Less frequent complications include temporary breathing problems, muscle pains, asthma reactions, temporary nerve damage, awareness during the operation, damage to teeth or dental prostheses, hoarseness or difficulty speaking, lip or tongue injury and epileptic seizures.

Rare serious complications include allergic reactions to anaesthetic drugs, unusual responses to drugs, lasting damage to nerves or the spinal cord, stroke, brain damage, heart problems, kidney failure, liver failure, lung damage, pulmonary emboli or pneumonia. Anaesthesia during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage.

When considering risks, it is important to keep things in perspective and bear in mind that major complications are rare, perhaps one in thousands.

Infection Control

The hospital is committed to infection control and compliance with pertinent guidelines and standards.

What does it cost?

You should be aware that Medicare and Medical Fund rebates generally do not cover the entire cost of your anaesthesia. In other words, there will usually be a gap that you will be expected to pay. If you have any questions about costs, please talk with your anaesthetist.

This policy incorporates the principles of the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights and is consistent with the National Healthcare Agreement (NHCA) 2009.
